The ALLaN (Academic Literacy, Learning and Numeracy) team works with academics to support the development of students’ language, literacy, and numeracy skills. Attention to these skills in course design and delivery is required by the English Language, Literacy and Numeracy Policy, which also mandates that the need for and sources of support are identified for students. Ideally, this would happen in early, low-stakes assessments, and in all assessment rubrics and assessment feedback.
The English Language, Literacy and Numeracy Policy Interact2 Organisation site (https://interact2.csu.edu.au/webapps/blackboard/execute/content/blankPage?cmd=view&content_id=_540566_1&course_id=_13250_1) contains many resources to assist you to do this quickly and easily, as well as a short recording to introduce you to the Policy.
Your ALLaN Faculty Liaison welcomes opportunities to explore opportunities to embed skill development workshops and resources in your subject. Announcements on your subject Interact2 site about ALLaN appointments, online skills workshops, study guides, and discussion forums (all available from http://student.csu.edu.au/study/ALLaN) are also useful to draw students’ attention to support options at critical times during the academic session.
Chris Hinton n Debbie Wheeler presented to sessional staff an overview of ALLaN services, how to identify students who need support, and strategies that support students to get the help they need.
